Water-based inks are widely used in flexographic and gravure printing due to their environmental advantages and regulatory compliance. They are especially popular in packaging applications such as food packaging, labels, and corrugated board. However, compared to solvent-based systems, water-based inks often face challenges related to surface properties, particularly slip and anti-blocking performance.
In high-speed printing and converting processes, printed substrates frequently come into contact with machine components and other printed surfaces. The effectiveness of PE wax depends on factors such as particle size, melting point, and compatibility with the binder system. Smaller particle sizes provide better surface coverage and more uniform performance, while appropriate melting points ensure stability during drying.
Compatibility with water-based resin systems is critical. Well-designed wax emulsions ensure stable dispersion and consistent results without phase separation.
Dosage optimization is essential. Insufficient wax may not provide adequate slip or anti-blocking, while excessive wax can reduce gloss or affect print clarity.
In some formulations, PE wax may be combined with small amounts of PTFE wax to achieve enhanced performance, especially in demanding applications.
