In the structural formula of polyether silicone, the ratio of the number of dimethylsiloxane segments to the number of polyethers can affect the compatibility and at the same time affect the surface tension. The polyether segment controls the compatibility with the coating, and the dimethylsiloxane segment controls the surface tension and smoothness. The smaller the n, the larger the m, the better the leveling and smoothing effect, but the n should not be too small, otherwise it will affect the compatibility and fail to achieve the purpose of modifying polydimethylsiloxane.
By inserting different types and numbers of polyether side chains on the silicone main chain, the compatibility of silicone and coatings can be improved to varying degrees. The polyether segment is composed of ethylene oxide (EO) and/or propylene oxide (PO) units through homopolymerization or copolymerization. Polyethylene oxide is highly polar and hydrophilic, relatively speaking , Polypropylene oxide has weak polarity and is lipophilic. Adjusting the ratio of EO to PO can control or change the polarity of polyether silicone, making it suitable for systems with different polarities. Increasing the ratio of EO can increase polarity and water solubility, and thus have better compatibility with highly polar coating systems, but it also increases the tendency of foaming and foam stabilization. Conversely, increasing the ratio of PO reduces the polarity and water solubility, and at the same time reduces the tendency to foam, and has better compatibility with low-polar systems.
