UV-curing inks and topcoats are widely used in packaging, labeling, commercial printing, and specialty printing due to their fast curing speed, high production efficiency, and excellent print quality. However, despite the many advantages of UV systems, additional surface protection is often required to achieve optimal durability and handling performance.

Fischer-Tropsch wax is one of the most effective additives for improving the surface properties of UV inks and topcoats. This synthetic wax is produced using the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process and features high hardness, excellent abrasion resistance, and outstanding thermal stability.

When micronized Fischer-Tropsch wax is added to a UV ink or topcoat formulation, the wax particles are evenly distributed throughout the system. After curing, these particles form a thin protective layer on the surface, helping to reduce friction and improve durability.

One of the main advantages of Fischer-Tropsch wax is improved scratch resistance. Printed packaging and labels often undergo handling, transportation, and mechanical contact. A protective surface layer helps reduce visible scratches and maintain print quality throughout the product’s lifecycle.

Slip properties are another important advantage. Lower surface friction allows printed materials to pass more smoothly through post-processing and conversion equipment. This improves production efficiency and reduces the risk of surface damage.

Fischer-Tropsch waxes also help improve anti-blocking properties. UV-coated papers and labels often stack shortly after curing. Fischer-Tropsch waxes help prevent sticking and improve handling performance by reducing surface adhesion.

Furthermore, the wax enhances abrasion resistance by protecting the cured ink film from abrasion. This is especially important for premium packaging applications where maintaining appearance is crucial.

Compared to traditional wax additives, Fischer-Tropsch waxes achieve a unique balance in hardness, durability, and compatibility. Fine micronization grades provide excellent surface protection while maintaining gloss and transparency.

Choosing the appropriate Fischer-Tropsch wax grade depends on particle size, melting point, and formulation requirements. Depending on the desired slip and protective properties, the addition level of Fischer-Tropsch wax is typically between 0.5% and 3%.

Today, Fischer-Tropsch waxes are widely used in UV flexographic inks, UV offset inks, UV screen printing inks, and topcoat varnishes. Many formulators also blend Fischer-Tropsch waxes with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) waxes to achieve higher scratch resistance and a lower coefficient of friction.

With the continued growth in demand for high-performance UV printing systems, Fischer-Tropsch waxes remain an important additive for improving durability and processing efficiency.
