The type of dispersant used in water-based pigment pastes.
The amount of dispersant is added according to the type of pigment and according to experience. If you have no experience, consult the pigment data and calculate the amount of dispersant. The calculation principle is as follows.
1. Inorganic pigments
Calculated based on the active fraction of the dispersant/pigment, the added amount is 10% of the oil absorption value. According to the different surface treatments of the pigments, it can vary from 5% to 15%.
2. Organic pigments
Calculated based on the active fraction of the dispersant/pigment, the addition amount is 20% of the BET value. Depending on the surface treatment of the pigment, it can vary from 15% to 50%.
3. Carbon black
Calculated according to the active fraction of the dispersant/pigment, the addition amount is 20% of the DBP value. Types of dispersants used in water-based pigment pastes according to Figure 26-11
Depending on the surface treatment of the pigment, it can vary from 15% to 30%.

Premix test
①Add the calculated amount of dispersant, and add an additional 20% of the experimental dosage. When using sensitive pigments, check the possible thickening effects of other components (defoamers, solvents, and other additives).
②If the viscosity is too high, change the amount of dispersant added or reduce the solid content of the pigment, and use the required equipment to disperse the color paste to the required viscosity. After reaching the requirement, use the finger research method/gloss comparison to check the phase with the base paint. water paraffin emulsion Capacitive.
③If the compatibility is OK, continue to check the storage stability (40~50℃, 4 weeks), and then check the viscosity, compatibility, gloss again, and compare with the finger-grinding method.
④ Continue to check other effects on the base paint as needed: viscosity, physical properties, and drying time.
